Do I Need Climate-Controlled Self Storage?
We offer both — and every unit we have is insulated.
Whether you choose climate-controlled or standard, you’re getting an insulated space that holds conditions far steadier than the weather outside. That isn’t true of every storage facility.
So the real question isn’t whether your belongings will be looked after. It’s which option fits what you’re storing — and that’s an easy one to answer.
Every Attic Plus unit is insulated
This is worth knowing up front, because a lot of people picture a standard storage unit as a metal shed that bakes in the summer sun.
Ours aren’t built that way. Every unit at Attic Plus is insulated, climate-controlled or not. A standard unit here is a genuinely good home for the great majority of household belongings, and plenty of our customers use one for years without a second thought.
What climate control adds on top
A climate-controlled unit goes a step further. It’s actively heated and cooled, so the temperature inside stays in a consistent range year-round rather than drifting with the seasons.
It’s the option customers choose when they want that extra steadiness for something particular — and it’s available in most of the same sizes as our standard units.
What customers usually choose climate control for
These are the things our customers most often want that extra consistency for:
- Photographs and family albums
- Wood furniture — tables, dressers, antiques, anything with joints or veneer
- Documents, books and paperwork
- Electronics and appliances
- Musical instruments
- Artwork and framed pieces
- Leather furniture
- Keepsakes and anything irreplaceable
The common thread isn’t price. It’s that these things tend to be delicate, sentimental, or impossible to replace — so the small extra cost buys the comfort of not thinking about it.
What a standard insulated unit handles well
Both options are solid units. Climate control is simply a feature suited to certain items, and a standard insulated unit is a great fit for:
- Tools, hardware and workbenches
- Lawn and garden equipment
- Plastic storage bins and totes
- Metal shelving and filing cabinets
- Building and construction materials
- Patio and outdoor furniture
- Seasonal decorations
- Dishes, cookware and glassware
- Most boxed household goods
If it already lives happily in your garage, a standard unit will suit it well — and you’ll have more space for your money.
What it costs
A climate-controlled unit typically runs about $20 to $40 a month more than the same size without it, depending on size and location.
That’s worth weighing against what’s going inside. For a few boxes of photographs or a dining set you plan to keep, it’s a small difference over a year. For garden tools, a standard unit leaves more in your pocket for the space you need.
A simple way to choose
Two questions usually settle it:
- Could you replace it? Photographs, documents and keepsakes can’t be re-bought at any price. That’s the clearest case for climate control.
- Does it already live in your garage? Then a standard insulated unit is the practical choice.
Still weighing it up? Call us and describe what you’re storing. Our on-site managers do this every day and will help you land on the right fit.

Frequently asked questions
Is climate-controlled storage worth the extra cost?
It depends on what’s going in. For photographs, wood furniture, documents, electronics or anything irreplaceable, most customers feel it is. For tools, garden equipment and boxed household goods, a standard insulated unit handles the job well.
Are your standard units insulated?
Yes. Every unit at Attic Plus is insulated, climate-controlled or not.
What’s the difference between the two, then?
Insulation keeps conditions inside steadier than outside. Climate control goes further and actively heats and cools the space, holding a consistent temperature year-round.
Can I store a television or computer in a standard unit?
Many customers do. If it’s expensive or you’re storing it for a long stretch, climate control gives you that extra margin.
Do all Attic Plus locations offer climate-controlled units?
Availability varies by location. Check your nearest location page to see what’s offered there.
